The Altai Mountains in western Mongolia are a prime focus of our conservation efforts and a remarkable convergence of nature and culture, where rugged landscapes and rich biodiversity coexist with the deep-rooted traditions of local communities. This vast region, stretching across glaciers, alpine meadows, and dense forests, is home to some of Mongolia's most iconic and endangered species, including the snow leopard, Altai argali, Siberian ibex, and the majestic golden eagle.
Through our collaborative programs, we work hand-in-hand with local communities and wildlife protection organisations to create sustainable conservation solutions. Our hands-on volunteering opportunities allow individuals and schools to engage directly in wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, and community outreach, ensuring that our efforts benefit both the environment and the people who live there.
Ecotourism plays a crucial role in our approach, offering visitors the chance to explore the region’s natural beauty while supporting conservation initiatives. By staying with local families and participating in cultural activities like Kazakh eagle hunting and Tuvan traditions, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the region’s unique cultural heritage and the importance of preserving it.
Our work aligns with the Mongolian government’s conservation efforts, particularly within the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a protected area vital for maintaining the region’s biodiversity. Together with our partners, we support initiatives such as anti-poaching patrols and educational programs that safeguard these ecosystems and the species that depend on them.
The Mongolian government recognizes the need to protect this unique region. Through the establishment of protected areas like the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, efforts are being made to conserve the diverse ecosystems and the species that rely on them.
Collaborative initiatives with international conservation organisations focus on anti-poaching efforts, habitat restoration, and community engagement to ensure that both the natural and cultural heritage of the Altai Mountains are preserved for future generations.
In the Altai Mountains, the enduring relationship between people and nature creates a landscape that is both ecologically significant and culturally rich, making it one of Mongolia’s most treasured regions.
